Thanington Hotel began as a Georgian farmhouse and has been taking in travellers for longer than almost anywhere else in Canterbury. The proportions of that original house are still here — high ceilings, deep sash windows, the kind of staircase people stop to photograph — and behind it sits something no other hotel in the city can offer: an indoor heated swimming pool, opening onto a walled garden. Der Innenhof lädt zum Verweilen ein. Außerdem gibt es einen ziemlich großen Pool (allerdings im Innenbereich). Auch das Wasser im Pool ist angenehm warm. Das Frühstück ist super lecker. Das Personal ist freundlich, zuvorkommend und reagiert schnell auf Anfragen und Wünsche. Ein unschlagbares Argument war für uns ein kostenloser Parkplatz.

Absolutely wonderful staff. Very helpful and kind. Everything clean and tidy, breakfast great and on time. Clear about allergy lists on foods. Bedrooms nicely made up. Good water pressure in shower too.

The hotel sits on Wincheap, the old road into Canterbury from the south-west, just outside the line of the medieval walls. It is a ten-minute walk along the pavement to Dane John Gardens, and from the far side of the gardens the Cathedral and the high street are only a few minutes further. Canterbury East is the closer of the two stations and the one to aim for from London Victoria — a short, flat walk away. Drivers have the advantage here: secure private parking on site, with the A2 and the M2 a few minutes out, the Channel Tunnel around half an hour, and Whitstable and the north Kent coast about twenty minutes north.

We look after an old building, which means we spend a lot of time on things guests never see — the boiler, the roof, the pool plant, the garden. What you should notice is the opposite: that the room is warm, the bed is made properly, and nobody had to chase us for anything. Most of what we know about Canterbury comes from being asked. Which walk is worth the weather, where to eat on a Sunday night, how long you really need at the Cathedral.
